Chapter 2. Planning an engagement
Source note
Source basis - S3, physical PDF page 7.
HCDI platform rule (Unit 3.2); general professional knowledge. A Deal Workspace records the deal basics, the requesting applicant, the parties and whether the engagement is in the Founding Engagements Programme. The client side is the company, not your Firm. The transaction type decides the stages, the parties, the dimension names and how many indicators apply. A foreign target needs Cross-border M&A, not Domestic M&A. Get the type right at the start. Once a score exists or an assessment is submitted, a type correction that changes which indicators apply is refused. An assessment is created at a stage, and a later one is a reassessment that carries no scores over. Common Error. Choosing the type that is quickest to set up and correcting it later. Later may be refused.
Setup choices have downstream effects
Basis - general professional knowledge and editorial explanation. External references are identified explicitly; this section adds no HCDI rule.
A transaction type determines later structure in the supplied platform description. Early correction may be possible where later correction is refused. Plan from the actual transaction rather than the quickest setup. Separate the stage of the engagement from the stage of an assessment.

Figure 3.2 Setup choices have downstream effects. Original conceptual illustration; arrows organise the discussion and do not establish a validated causal effect or a scoring procedure.
Original exercise L3 E02
Basis - original fictional exercise. The organisation, events and any numbers are invented for learning. No HCDI result is assigned.
A domestic type is chosen for a foreign target because it seems easier. The team intends to change it after evidence and scoring.
| Analytical task | Learner response required |
| Observation | Identify what the stated record directly establishes. |
| Inference | State the interpretation that still needs support. |
| Alternative | Identify a plausible alternative or missing context. |
| Authority | Identify the relevant credential or role boundary. |
Question - Why is this a planning risk?
Worked answer: Part G, exercise L3 E02.
