Chapter 5. Founder attachment and ownership readiness

Source note

Source basis - S1, physical PDF page 10.

external academic referenceexternal academic reference (Schein & Schein, 2017); HCDI pillar P4, Founder Attachment & Ownership Readiness. Founders shape the culture of the organisations they build, and the way they hold ownership is part of that culture (Schein & Schein, 2017). When control is shared or sold, the change can be emotional as well as financial. The founder may be asked to step back from decisions that have defined them.

The fourth pillar, Founder Attachment & Ownership Readiness, is distinctive to HCDI. It concerns how ready the ownership and its founder are for the change in front of them, such as succession, a sale, a partner or a listing. This manual states only that the pillar exists and what it is called.

Red Flag. A transaction timetable that assumes the founder will adapt quickly because the founder agreed to the deal. Agreeing to a deal and being ready for what follows are different things.

Ownership change affects identity and authority

Basis - general professional knowledge and editorial explanation. External references are identified explicitly; this section adds no HCDI rule.

A founder can agree to a sale while remaining deeply involved in daily decisions. Separate a documented transfer from how authority operates. Avoid personality diagnoses: an intervention may reflect a reserved power, a temporary transition arrangement or unresolved delegation. Examine concrete decisions, their dates and the agreed boundaries. This general explanation does not reconstruct the protected assessment of founder readiness.

Original exercise L1 E05

Basis - original fictional exercise. The organisation, events and any numbers are invented for learning. No HCDI result is assigned.

Larch Foods appoints a new chief executive. The founder later reverses two supplier decisions directly with purchasing staff. The board says succession is complete because the contract is signed.
